Oct 27, Small business marketing is still the answer

Despite certain claims that the economy is improving, official figures announced this week show that the economy contracted by 0.4 between July and September meaning that we are still in recession.

This is only a first estimate, so this may change, but these figures suggest that the UK is actually in the longest recession since records began in 1955.

Based on my discussions with business owners, it would seem that this is no real surprise and the general consensus amongst this community is that it will take at least two years for a recovery to really start to take shape. Some even predict as much as 10 years.

This all sounds rather gloomy. Especially for the small business owner. And it does mean that there are still tough times to be had and no doubt many more casualties.

But how we respond to this news is critical. Some companies will continue to cut back expenditure on things like marketing, but history continues to prove this course of action as an unwise one.

In the current climate, companies have to continue to work harder to get the business that is out there. And effective marketing is the best way to do this.

If care is taken to only spend resource on marketing that will bring you more business than it costs, then it can be the difference between survival and bust.

May 7, The best campaign in the world??

I dont know if you have been aware of the Best Job in the World campaign that has been ongoing since January of this year? It involved the search for the caretaker of Hamilton Island in Queensland, Australia.

The campaign harnessed social media to create a global competition which cleverly disguised the prize as a job.

(The job involves being luxuriously accommodated on this beautiful island for 6 months, with a salary of 73,000 and responsibilities which include working 12 hours a month as an ambassador writing blogs and generating media coverage.)

The result? A highly effective PR stunt which effectively achieved, it is claimed, 50 million of publicity value through the combined global coverage in publications, radio, TV, blogs, websites, forums etc.

The concept captured the imagination of the world, and was a real feel good story which started in January when it was cold in the UK, and everyone was beginning to feel a little low with the economic climate.

My point in sharing this with you is this...

The phenomenal amount of media attention this campaign enjoyed was the result of PR not advertising.

Granted, this was part of an 850,000 marketing campaign. But the fact remains that PR can be a ferociously powerful tool. One which small businesses should grasp with both hands (and it doesn't have to cost you a penny). Be as creative as you can both in terms of what you put out there and how you do it....

Mar 26, Sticking to the basics...

It was reported this week that supermarket chain Sainsbury's has said sales increased in the first three months of the year. This has been partly attributed to the 60 rise in sales of its "Basic" range and the introduction of campaigns such as "feed your family for a fiver".

This is cast iron evidence that even in difficult times, you can still grow your business provided you stick to some basic rules such as:

Identifying and responding to your customers' needs, and

Keep telling your customers about how you are meeting their needs.

Even in today's market, people are still spending. They still have needs to be met. It's just that these needs may be different and businesses, especially small businesses, have to fight harder to earn their custom.

Research shows very strongly that those companies who keep up a varied marketing campaign will not only fair better in uncertain times, but will also come out the other end much stronger.

Mar 19, When the going gets tough...

You may have heard in the news today that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has forecast that the word economy is set to shrink by between 0.5 and 1.0 in 2009. This would be the first global contraction in 60 years. There is no doubt that this is disturbing news for businesses as a whole.

But before we all just give up here and now, remember this. The implications on many small businesses are that there is less money available to be spent on the goods and services we sell. But money is still being spent. We just have to work harder to get people or businesses to spend it on what we are offering. We have to market ourselves more smartly.

Using marketing to build relationships and loyalty with would-be customers doesnt have to cost an arm and a leg and it can make a huge difference to your bottom line.

Check out my marketing team for loads of low cost but highly effective marketing tips.
