Press Contributions
When considering press contributions, there are a few things you should know…
- When a journalist cannot find an eager industry expert to produce a by-lined article for him/her, they have to write articles themselves.
- Written pieces in publications that are not pure news stories are typically called features.
- Most publications produce a Features List which outlines the subject areas, and usually a brief synopsis, of the features due to appear over the next 12 months.
Armed with this knowledge, your job is easy! You already know your
target media
(don’t you??), so contact them and get a copy of their features list. Peruse it well, note any features that are of interest to you and your
target market
and ask yourself if you could add value to the feature. By value, I mean add some opinion, advice or expertise on the subject matter that will enhance what the writer is planning to say. Once again always remember that journalists are generally very busy people. Contributions not only add value to the content, but it also makes the work easier. Your quote could mean several words less that the writer has to come up with him/herself! And don’t forget. The more valuable you make yourself, the more likely you’ll be called on to make comments, the more familiar your name will become, the more you’ll be deemed an expert in your field and, ultimately, the more people will want to buy from you! Simple!
