Telemarketing Top Tips

When using the telephone as part of a marketing campaign, follow these telemarketing top tips to enhance your success....

  1. Be extremely courteous, even if you get a rude response, and don’t be over-familiar.
  2. Make sure you are speaking to the decision maker before starting your pitch.
  3. Look to engage the customer with a friendly introduction and make them feel unique, not just one of a very large database.
  4. See secretaries or receptionists as an ally not an enemy. Give them information, treat them with respect. By enlisting them as a resource you are far more likely to get through to decision maker.
  5. Set a time limit and ask at the beginning of the call if the prospect can spare the required time, say five minutes, to talk.
  6. Do not read a prepared script like a robot, make it sound natural.
  7. Keep it simple and to the point. Time is money, both for you and your potential customer.
  8. Refer to other marketing materials at the start of the call (letter, press coverage, advertising...)
  9. Ask questions and make notes during the conversation to ensure that you pick up on everything the prospect is saying, without interrupting.
  10. Listen to the Customer. If the customer indicates that they are genuinely not interested, accept this and thank them for their time. Don’t be pushy.
  11. Be consistent, confident and direct. Believe in what you are saying – otherwise your prospective client certainly won’t!
  12. Welcome objections – these are valuable to understanding your market, and can be turned into a positive.
  13. Don’t be afraid to ask for a commitment one way or another. A no today is far better than a no down the line when you’ve spent more direct marketing money on them!
  14. Give a contact number and address for future reference.
