Website traffic

Attracting the right traffic to your site

Your site might be absolutely fantastic. But if noone sees it, then it is of little use to you (or them!). The more targeted traffic you can attract (by targeted I mean visitors that actually are in the market for your product or service), the more you will make money from your online presence.

There is a whole range of ways to attract visitors to your site, for example:

  • Using mainstream offline marketing techniques, such as those we cover on this site (advertising , direct mail , PR , etc)
  • Online marketing – such as:
    1. Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising allows you to get to the top of the search engines but you only pay when someone clicks to go to your website. How much you pay depends on how much competition there is amongst other advertisers in your category.
    2. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) involves improving a web site's structure, content, and relevant links in an attempt to improve the position of your site in search results for relevant keywords.
    3. Online PR including blogging and article marketing which involves placing ideas within online communities with the hope that they will spread virally.
    4. Email marketing – using email addresses of visitors to keep in contact and build relationships, all the while promoting your website.
    5. Affiliate programmes - for example linking with another company which targets the same market and either selling your product on their site, or selling their product on your site for a commission payment.
    6. Banner ads which are online advertisements embedded into a web page with a link to the website of the advertiser.
    7. Video Search Marketing attempts to promote a business by strategically placing short video clips on websites such as You Tube to be picked up by search engine or promoted through internal rating systems.

We could write a whole book on each of these strategies – and over time we will be sharing more information on the subject of website traffic .

In the meantime though, of all the resources I have come across on any of the above, SBI (Site Build It) is by far the most comprehensive and easy to follow. It is packed full of advice and even the tools necessary to build your own highly successful website.
